What are the IELTS Eligibility criteria 2021-2022?
1)Listening in IELTS
Practice as much as you can to get used to foreign accent, to multi-task such as listen and write at the same time, to improve your speed, you can take Cambridge IELTS Listening Tests which are easily available on youtube for free.
You must disconnect yourself from the surroundings and focus hard while you listen to the audio of IELTS lissening class.
The facilitators will perform an audio check a few minutes before the test gets started. If you face any challenge with the headset or audio then do not hesitate and escalate that as soon as possible or immediately . But don’t include yourself in a group of students who would raise such issues falsely.
Always answer in capital letters only else if the answer was John and you write john, it will be wrong answer.
Stick to word limit else your answer will be marked as wrong.
Always keep the time format in decimal instead of ratio. For instance, write 2.55pm instead of 2:55pm else it will be incorrect
Don’t panic if you could not listen or understand a particular portion, let it go & refocus otherwise it would distract you & you will miss out on more
At the end of the audio, try to recall the answer if you’ve missed any in order to attempt all 40 questions as there is no negative marking
Be watchful to copy your answers correctly to the main sheet in the last extra 10 minutes given after the test is completed
2)Speaking in IELTS
Find a partner to practice it and work on the feedback received around grammar, tenses, sentence formation, vocabulary, pronounciation, using simple / complexed sentences & fluency as the examiner will also mark you on the same parameters
Keep your description brief in
Part A
questions (short answers) but be conversational. For instance, if you are asked what do you prefer eating in breakfast? Then, don’t just say Oatmeal but something like – Although, I am happy to eat anything in the morning which is home cooked but my favorite is a bowl of fresh fruits along with a glass of hot milk
In Part B, you need to think on the feet and write the rough notes simultaneously for the question followed by 3 subquestions to it in the cue card which would be given. You would be required to speak for about 2–3 minutes continuously until asked to stop. Here is the trick, usually people make the mistake of keeping the answers for the first two questions small and stretch their answer for the third question due to which they start to feel short of words. So do speak at good length right from answering the first question to the last in
Part B
This is the part where your answers should be lengthier and you must be expressive. In this part they would ask you follow up questions based on the topic which was touched in Part B
If you do not understand any question then do ask the interviewer to repeat the question, however, it should not happen more than once or maximum twice so be attentive throughout the test to listen and understand the question in one go
Follow basic mannerism. For example,if you asked how are you Mr? Then you reply and do ask it also.
If you speak something and you realize what you have just spoken had a grammatical error or you misprounced a word then correct it in a conversational way but again this should not happen more than once
3)Reading part in IELTS
You may have heard about scanning and skimming, yes it does hold a lot of importance in this test
You may not have to read the entire para but identify the content which matches to what is asked in the question
Make sure that you read and understand the question completely before you search the answer
If you are unable find a particular answer then do not linger on it but move on & keep that one in the parking lot to search later once you are done with all the others
In True-False-Not Given or Yes-No-Not Given question be very particular about what is asked or said and only answer as True/Yes if you find same information in the paragraph, False/No if you find opposite information & Not Given if no such information is available. These questions are tricky but easy to crack once you understand these tips clearly & PRACTICE
Like all of the above tests even in this one the difficulty level of the questions will continue to mount as you will move to the next section which will make you consume more time to find the answers in Section C-D & less time in section A-B. Thus, keep a watch on time as you want to attempt all the questions because again, there is no negative marking
Write all the answers in capital letters & do not write shortforms like T/F but complete words TRUE/FALSE
Ensure to stick to word limit else your answer will be marked as incorrect
4)Writing part in IELTS
Follow the word limit, the limit for letter is 150 words, you should keep them between 150–200. In case of an essay, the limit is 250 words but it should be kept strictly between 250–300
Structure for letter should be a total of 4 parts – Introduction + highlighting the purpose, Body Paragraph 1, Body Paragraph 2, Conclusion
Structure for essay should also be a total of 4 parts – Introduction + Paraphrasing what’s mentioned in the essay question, Body Paragraph 1, Body Paragraph 2, Conclusion
Letters are of 3 types Informal, Semi-formal & Formal. Use appropriate signature for each type of letter Warm Regards, Yours Sincerely & Yours Faithfully accordingly
Usually in essays they would ask you to present both the sides of an argument by giving you a situation of agree/disagree, advantages/disadvantages etc. In such cases, in body para 1 present the positive side and then start body para 2 by writing “On the other hand”, “On the contrary” etc. to describe the negative side
Read good IELTS essays online to understand the structure and word weaving better
Make sure that your handwriting is readable, spelling errors are not there & use simple & complexed sentences both (Google them to know more)
Take 5 min to use rough sheet in order to jot down key points, give your letter / essay a structure as in how you would like to present it and then start writing on the answer sheet to avoid using too much eraser
In the end, do proof read them both once written to rectify if there are any errors made unknowingly
I wish I could keep my answer shorter than this but I thought of mentioning all the important points which I followed while preparing for my own IELTS test.
