How to measure Blood Pressure correctly :
You can measure blood pressure correctly by following 13 rules.
- Sit quietly for atleast 5 minutes before measuring blood pressure.
- To begin, place the BP cuff on patient’s bare upper arm 1 inch above the of elbow joint.
- Pull the end of the cuff tightly around the arm.
- place it tight enough so that it can only slip two fingertips under thebTop edge of the BP cuff.
- Make sure patient’s skin doesn’t pinch when the cuff inflates.
- When the cuff is ready, place the stethoscope disk facedown under the BP cuff, just to the medial side of upper arm.
- Place the earpiece of the stethoscope in the ears, with the earpieces facing forward, pointing toward the tip of your nose. Rest the gauge in the open palm of the hand of BP cuffed arm so that you can clearly see it.
- Then, squeeze the pump rapidly with your opposite hand until the gauge reads 30 points above your usual systolic pressure. (Be sure to inflate the cuff fastly due to hamper blood supply to the hand).
- Stop squeezing. Turn the knob on the pump toward you to let the air out slowly.
- Let the pressure fall 2 or 3 millimeters, or lines on the dial meter, per second while listening for your heart sounds.
- Note the reading when you first hear a heartbeat sound this is called systolic blood pressure.
- Note when you no longer hear the heartbeat sounds this also called diastolic blood pressure.
- Rest quietly and wait about 1-2 minutes before taking another blood pressure measurement.
