What is MCI?

MCI stands for Medical Council of India. India License Exam also called MCI. 

Post-graduation system in India for international doctors:

Some people may think that passing MCI is the only way to get an Indian license for National and international Doctors. Remember, it is for national (indian) students who take MBBS degree from abroad. Only if you are an Indian citizen you can give the MCI exam.Those who go to non-indian country from India to do MBBS and become doctors from aboard, after completing MBBS, they will come back in india and give MCI for registered physician in india. Any foreign doctors can not to give MCI exam for registered doctors in India.

That means foreigners can never be an Indian Council Registered Physician. For practice in india You have to apply FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduates Examination), is a licensure examination, governed by the National Board of Examinations in India, It is Mandatory for international medical graduate for practicing in india as a doctors.

However, there are some post-graduation options for foreign physicians.

  1. MD / MS in AIIMS (All India Institutte of Medical Science)
  2. MD / MS in JIPMER (Jawahrlal Institute of Postgradute Medical Education and Research)
  3. MD / MS by DNB (Diplomate of National Board)

MD/MS in AIIMS

If you  want to do MD/MS in AIIMS (All India Institutte of Medical Science) you have to follow a diplomatic way. Foreign medical graduates cannot apply directly to AIIMS (All India Institutte of Medical Science). Only selected candidates by diplomats from developing countries will be able to take the entrance test. All you have to do is go to the Ministry of Health and apply for the entrance exam at AIIMS (All India Institutte of Medical Science). If you are selected, they will do all the work for you. You will take the entrance test in which quota is known as foreign quota or sponsored quota. Among the candidates from Asian countries, only those who get the highest marks in the entrance examination will be selected from AIIMS (All India Institutte of Medical Science) for MD/MS.

AIIMS Entrance test 2022:

MD/MS in AIIMS exam system & information –

Course Duration: 3 Years
Post during MD/MS: Junior Resident
Question: 200 MCQ
Duration of Entrance exam: 3 Hours
Negative marking: 1/3 (0.33)  Marks


This test is held in May and November every year. Where you can apply for MD / MS at AIIMS in only one subject. Every year you get 30 days leave. Residents will be assessed every 6 months. If they do not have Satisfactory, they may kick you out of the course. If you leave the course within 1 year, you have to pay a fine of 50 thousand rupees and if you leave the course after 1 year, you have to pay a fine of 1 lakh rupees. All expenses during the course will be borne by the Government of your country. It is like a kind of government scholarship.
You must return to the country at the end of the course. However, sometimes you are allowed to work for 2 years, in which case you need the sincerity of the government of your own country.

MD/MS in JIPMER (Jawahrlal Institute of Postgradute Medical Education and Research)

If you  want to do MD/MS in JIPMER (Jawahrlal Institute of Postgradute Medical Education and Research) you have to follow a diplomatic way. Foreign medical graduates cannot apply directly to JIPMER (Jawahrlal Institute of Postgradute Medical Education and Research). Only selected candidates by diplomats from developing countries will be able to take the entrance test. All you have to do is go to the Ministry of Health and apply for the entrance exam. MD/MS at AIIMS and  MD/MS at JIMPER application criteria, Rules, regulations and Exam pattern almost Same.

MD/MS by DNB

It is operated by India Autonomous System in India. There is no need to take any exam for foreign physicians in DNB. However, it is a very expensive course. Usually doing MD/MS in this way costs about 25-30 lakh rupees. However this MD / MS is recognized by MCI. You can go directly to different agencies/medical universities and apply directly. It have no diplomatic crisis as AIIMS and JIMPER.

Indian Council for Medical Research:

There is also a research institute in India called ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research). where you can do various research courses. Many PhDs in Clinical and Basic Sciences can be done at this institute.

Masters in Hospital Administration:

In India, MHA (Masters in Hospital Administration) courses can be done at various private universities. Also good job offers are available by doing this course in Middle East, Singapore, etc.
