Are you harming the body by withholding urine?

Harmful effects of withholding urine

Suppose you are in an important meeting or traveling on a public transport and you feel the urge to urinate at that moment. You don't even have a chance to go to any restroom immediately. You have to hold on to the urine until you can find a place. We have all been victims of such situations at one time or another. Which may cause us harm. But we do not understand that. The Times of India has published details about the harm that can be done to our body if we stop urinating.

Human Bladder:

The bladder of the human body can hold about 2 cups of urine. It takes 9 to 10 hours for our body to produce this amount of urine. So, you can easily hold urine for 9 to 10 hours while traveling or going out.

Bad effect withholding urine

The problem starts when the organ is full. Our bladder is flexible and has a receptor in between that sends signals to the brain that it is full. When you hold urine, the bladder expands to hold more fluid, and this extra time can be detrimental to the organ. This is the cause of our serious concern.

According to doctors, we need to empty our bladder every three hours. Generally, a person needs to urinate 7-8 times a day. However, the amount of fluids you take in a day depends on how often you can urinate when you go out for a walk or while traveling.

Damage to the body by holding urine:

Occasional urination is not harmful. However, if this happens regularly, it can lead to a number of bladder health problems. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common health problems caused by urinary retention. This type of infection causes irritation of the bladder and urges to urinate frequently. UTIs(Urinary Tract infections) are most common in women than men.

As a result of retention of urine, the sensitivity of the receptors present in the bladder decreases. Over time it becomes more intense. There is a situation where the bladder loses control and occasionally urinates, especially when coughing, sneezing or when there is an urge to urinate. Holding urine for more than 10 hours is not a good thing at all.

When to consult a doctor:

Holding urine is definitely not good for health. But there is no reason to be afraid, empty your bladder whenever you feel the urge to urinate. Consult a doctor if you have any difficulty in urinating. Several health conditions can make it difficult to empty your bladder. In such cases, such a situation should not be taken lightly at all and medical help should be sought as soon as possible.
