Tips for Residents application in United States for immigrants physician - Doctors Gang

Residents Physician carrier in United States

Physicians from around the world have long immigrated to the United States because of the abundance of jobs, social security, and improved living conditions. Becoming a doctor in the United States after passing a medical examination from another country is probably the most complex, time consuming, costly and arduous process in the world. I have had the opportunity to gain (some) of this experience. Many people contact me every year for detailed advice. That’s why, I’m writing something here so that counseling candidates benefit.

Residency programme and USMLE in USA

Two way for immigration physician in United States

If you pass the medical examination from any country of the world, you cannot come to America with that certificate and do direct medicine. This involves two steps:

I will not discuss USMLE here, as many have discussed in many places. Just two things to keep in mind is that those who currently pass USMLE, their average marks in Step-1 and Step-2 are above 230 and they almost all pass this test at once. I am basically discussing a brief idea about the process of getting a residency and some empirical advice. In fact, the process of getting a residency is much more complicated, costly, time consuming and uncertain than the process of passing USMLE.

Apply  for residents application  in USA

After passing USMLE (Step-1, Step 2 Clinical Skills and Clinical Knowledge) ECFMG Certificate is awarded. You should apply for residency as soon as you get this certificate. This should be known in detail before applying for residency. That is why proper research and study is needed. The first things you need to know as part of this process are:

-Apply to any hospital (whether that hospital has a specific requirement: e.g. visa issue, USMLE score, whether they hire foreigners, how many years of doctoral candidates they take, etc.)

-Personal Statement (of Purpose)

-Three / four recommendation letters

-Resume / CV

Personal statement for residents application  in USA

One of the main steps in this process is to write a personal statement. Twelve font size type one page long personal statements are considered the best. It basically deals with things that cannot be written in one's own biodata. Personal statements are by no means a copy or duplication of biodata. Here is a description of what a candidate is like as a person, what is his life philosophy, what are his personal reasons for being a doctor. At the same time, he was given an idea of what the hospital would gain if he was given a hospital job and his own professional development and growth. In paragraph 3/4 this whole thing has to be described beautifully in one page. This text must be grammatically and spelling 100% accurate. Therefore, it takes 2-3 months to write this one page, it has to be reviewed by experienced people. The biggest thing is that this one-page description should be the candidate's own words, not taught or imitated by others. For this reason, writing by others or imitating from the internet is extremely harmful and suicidal. The success of the candidate depends largely on the description of this one page.

Recommendations letter or reference letter   for residents application  in USA

Importance of Reference Letter / Recommendation Letter after Personal Statement. A letter of recommendation from someone in the United States is very important in applying for residency in the United States. A letter from a professor in one's own country does not come in handy here for two main reasons: the format of writing a letter of recommendation to one's own country is usually not compatible with the American type. For this reason, a residency candidate should start working with someone involved in the medical profession in the United States from the very beginning so that a letter of recommendation can be obtained from him in case of need. Letters of recommendation written in very strong language from at least three people play a very important role. The person who writes should be told to send the letter directly to "Iraj", meaning that he will write the letter in secret and the candidate will not see the letter. If the candidate sees the letter, its importance will be reduced to a great extent. This letter should basically be a description of the candidate's clinical experience and a description of the candidate's personal characteristics and professional characteristics. The description of the candidate's scientific research experience is comparatively less important. Letters from relatives or acquaintances are of little importance. In addition, the candidate should submit a letter of recommendation with a description of the training on the subject for which he has applied for residency.

Make a hospital list  for residents application  in USA

Before completing the work of personal statement and reference letter, the candidate should make a list of the hospitals to which he should apply. At present, it is advisable to apply in 30-50 hospitals knowing the details of each hospital, although almost all the candidates apply in more than 100 hospitals. In my opinion, doing it is just a waste of money. Candidates should apply in the hospital where they will apply, knowing the prerequisites of the application in detail. These are usually recorded on the hospital's website. If not, the program coordinator should be notified by e-mail or phone. In these cases, the program director should not be e-mailed in any way (this is usually the opposite). Candidates should not apply in any of the hospitals which are not eligible to apply, as they will never call this candidate for interview. Thus, 30-50 hospitals selected through meticulous research should apply. It is very important to apply on the first day of application. In many cases, the three letters of recommendation of the candidate have not been prepared yet, in this case also the application should be made on the first day and the letter of recommendation can be sent later.

Visa processing  for residents application  in USA

Candidates almost always ask me if step-3 is necessary to apply for residency. The simple answer to this question is, yes, urgent, very urgent. Those who are not permanent United States  citizens or permanent residents  in the United States must have passed Step 3 if they wish to apply for an H-1 visa. In addition, candidates who have passed Step-3 are given special importance. Therefore, if possible, you must pass step 3, get more marks if possible, and pass at once. If you want to do residency in America, you can come with two types of visas: J-1 and H-1. Every candidate should come to America on H-1 visa (I will write about the visa issue later), to get H-1 visa, you must have passed step-3.

Bio-data fill up for residents application  in USA

Residency candidates have to fill a biodata online (Iraj). The information provided here should be accurate, objective and truthful. No information should be given which the candidate cannot prove with proper documents. Giving false information about the application and if it is caught, do it for the candidate will be the cause of the consequences. A picture of the candidate is to be attached in this application. Every effort should be made to ensure that the image is consistent with the medical profession, and if necessary, the image should be taken by a professional photographer. The importance of the picture should not be underestimated. In this application the candidate has to mention any research, researched publication, presentation, any other experience, experience of any volunteer, description of any step taken in human welfare, affiliation with any organization, proficiency in different languages and hobby of the candidate.

Interview depends on some factor for residency in USA

Whether a candidate will be interviewed at the applied hospital depends on a number of factors: his / her USMLE score, how many years he / she passed medical, his / her clinical work experience in America, his / her visa requirements, reference letter, personal statement (and someone influential in that hospital). On whether). The lower the score, the less likely he is to be interviewed, the less likely he is to be interviewed if he has passed the medical examination more than five years ago. Anyone with no clinical (especially hospital, observership, internship, etc.) work experience in the United States is less likely to be interviewed. Many people spend more time on research work without clinical experience, which does more harm than good. Research experience is important but must be in addition to the required clinical experience.

The above brief description will be able to answer most of the questions of a candidate. If a candidate is interviewed from a hospital, how he or she will be interviewed depends on whether or not he or she will get residency. Although not usually offered a job in the United States, the interviewer praised the candidate. Most of the time it is confusing because the candidate thinks that he will get a job here. The interviewer praises all the candidates, and does so mainly to encourage the candidate, to come to the interview with difficulty. This encouragement / praise is not always a guarantee of employment. I will write in detail at another time about how to give a successful interview. Good luck to all the candidates.
